G.O.D / AB Switch Work

Gang operated disconnector and air-break switch work on 11 / 22 kV overhead lines — supply, structure, erection, alignment, earthing and operational testing.

SWITCH FRAME ALL THREE BLADES MOVE TOGETHER PART-SEATED = ARCING TIE BAR OPERATING PIPE LOCKED HANDLE HANDLE EARTH BOND SEATING FULL PART

One handle, three blades. The gang linkage is what makes isolation real: if a blade only part-seats the switch reads closed and arcs, and if one does not open fully the line reads isolated and is not. The handle is bonded to earth because a person stands at it.

The Work

A gang operated disconnector — the AB switch on the pole, worked from an operating handle at ground level — is how an overhead HT line is isolated and sectionalised. It is what lets a crew take an outage on one spur instead of the whole feeder, and what makes a transformer safe to work on without waiting for the utility to switch upstream.

The work is mechanical as much as electrical. All three blades have to close together and fully, the operating pipe and linkage have to move freely after a monsoon, the structure has to be rigid enough that the line pull does not twist the frame, and the whole assembly has to be earthed. A G.O.D that half-closes is worse than none — it arcs, and it gives a false sense of isolation.

Scope Covered

  • G.O.D / AB switch structure fabrication and pole mounting
  • Switch erection, blade alignment and gang-operation setting
  • Operating pipe, handle, linkage and locking arrangement
  • Jumpering, connectors and line side termination
  • Structure and operating handle earthing
  • Lightning arrestor mounting at the same location where required
  • Operational checks, greasing and handover

Why It Matters

Where This Work
Decides The Outcome

It decides how big your next outage is

Without sectionalising points, any work on the line means shutting the whole feeder. With them, the outage is limited to the spur being worked on — which on a running plant is the difference between an hour of downtime and a day.

Alignment is what makes isolation real

If one blade does not seat fully, the switch looks closed and runs hot; if one does not open fully, the line looks isolated and is not. Gang setting and blade alignment checked under operation is the entire point of the job.

The handle is the part a person touches

The operating handle is at ground level and gets used in the rain. Bonding it to a tested earth, and locking it against unauthorised operation, is what keeps an isolation point from becoming a hazard.

How We Execute

Survey To Handover

01

Location & structure

Sectionalising point fixed on the feeder, structure fabricated and mounted to suit pole type and line pull.

02

Erection & alignment

Switch mounted, blades aligned and gang-set so all three phases make and break together and fully.

03

Connection & earthing

Line side jumpering and connectors made off; structure and operating handle bonded to a measured earth.

04

Operate & hand over

Switch operated through its full travel under supervision, linkage greased, locking fitted and the point recorded on the feeder drawing.
